Student visa

Apply for a College Student (留学) visa at the Japanese Embassy/Consulate in your country. Your institution submits a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) first — this takes 1-3 months. After the COE is issued, the visa itself takes 5 working days. Total timeline: 2-4 months.

Work while studying

Student visa holders can work up to 28 hours/week with a 'Permission to Engage in Activity other than that Permitted' certificate. After graduation, Japan offers a 1-year Designated Activities visa for job-seeking, extendable once. Japan is increasingly aggressive in recruiting international talent.
